Westlake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wish I had discovered <a title=\"Pocket Lenins and Predatory Birds: Great Descriptions Wrap-Up\" href=\"http:\/\/blogbobaloo.robertmangeot.com\/pocket-lenins-and-predatory-birds-great-descriptions-wrap-up\/\">Donald E. Westlake <\/a>years earlier than I did. He is a writing\u00a0hero for his ability to tell a story and to make it zing. His <em>The Ax<\/em> is as terrifying a novel as I\u2019ve ever read. His Parker character is legendary, but it\u2019s the Dortmunder crew\u00a0I love most.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some favorite examples of his distinctive wit:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They, all of them, the men and the women\u2019s auxiliary, too, were hunched over their drinks with that thousand-yard stare that suggests therapy was no longer an option. In short, the place looked like that section of the socialist realist mural where the workers have been utterly shafted by the plutocrats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">&#8211; Watch Your Back (2005)<!--more--><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The lawyers were young bird dogs, skinny and focused.
